Weeks 1 and 2 - For weeks 1 and 2 we will be using the book, "Essential Piano Exercises Every Piano Player Should Know" by Jerald Simon. We begin by discussing Piano FUNdamentals (emphasis on the word FUN) - What piano students should know. The course material is introduced and then we spend the two weeks focusing on how to teach key signatures, intervals, major, minor, and diminished pentascales (5 note scales), tetra chords, one octave scales (contrary motion), one octave scales (parallel motion), two octave scales (contrary motion), two octave scales (parallel motion), intervals created from each major scale (blocked and broken), triads (blocked and broken), 6th chords (blocked and broken), 7th chords (blocked and broken). We discuss teaching these basic FUNdamentals in all key signatures and in all inversions (root, first, second, and third inversions - when you have four note chords). We discuss and demonstrate teaching all triads (Major, Minor, Diminished, Augmented, Sus4, and Sus2 chords) in all keys and in all inversions. We discuss and demonstrate teaching all sixth chords (Major and Minor) in all keys and in all inversions. We discuss and demonstrate teaching all seventh chords (Major 7th, Minor 7th, Dominant 7th, Minor 7th, Minor 7th flat 5, Minor 7th sharp 5 and Diminished 7th chords) in all keys and in all inversions.  We also briefly talk about chord progressions and chords and the practical application of music theory.

Weeks 3 and 4 - For weeks 3 and 4 we will be using the book, "Essential Jazz Piano Exercises Every Piano Player Should Know" by Jerald Simon. We begin learning blues pentascales, the 12 bar blues, major and minor blues scales. We discuss teaching the 2-5-1 (ii7 - V7 - IMaj7) in all keys and in all inversions/voicings. We introduce basic mods (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolean, Locrian). Jerald will teach you simple and fun jazz chord progressions like the Whole-Half-Half walking bass progression that can be combined with 7th chords or the 2-5-1 chord progression. You will learn about using the chromatic scale, using jazz chords and jazz chord progressions and how to teach a jazz boogie-woogie pattern. We briefly discuss teaching improvisation and modal jazz. In the book, "Essential Jazz Piano Exercises Every Piano Player Should Know," there are 33 original jazz pieces from beginning levels up through advanced levels that teach these jazz concepts. The entire purpose of weeks 3 and 4 will be to help you as a piano teacher learn how to better play and start teaching jazz music to your piano students.

Weeks 5 and 6 - For weeks 5 and 6 we will be using the book, "Essential New Age Piano Exercises Every Piano Player Should Know" by Jerald Simon. We begin by learning basic new age concepts and theory elements such as various new age left hand patterns, using 3rds, 5th, and 6th intervals with the right hand to create a new age sound. We discuss using 3rd intervals with the right hand while the left hand plays a simple 1 - 5 - 8 - 9 - 10 left hand pattern. Various 6/8 and other time signatures are introduced and we will learn how to teach new age music in interesting time signatures. In the book, "Essential New Age Piano Exercises Every Piano Player Should Know," there are 20 original new age pieces from beginning levels up through advanced levels that teach these new age concepts. The entire purpose of weeks 5 and 6 will be to help you as a piano teacher learn how to better play and start teaching new age music to your piano students.

Weeks 7 and 8 - For weeks 7 and 8 we will be using the book, "100 Left Hand Patterns Every Piano Player Should Know" by Jerald Simon. We begin by learning the Five Stages of Fake Book Mastery  - five levels of "faking it" with Fake Books and Lead Sheets. In the book, ""100 Left Hand Patterns Every Piano Player Should Know" by Jerald Simon, there are 100 left hand patterns divided into two main sections: 100 Left Hand Patterns, and 100 Songs in Fake Book format. The left hand patterns are divided into four separate styles: 1. Basic Left Hand Patterns, 2. Jazz, Blues, and Boogie-Woogie Left Hand Patterns, 3. Rock and Pop Left Hand Patterns, and 4. New Age and Contemporary Left Hand Patterns. We go over the practical application of how to use the 100 left hand patterns with the 100 songs in Fake Book format. The 100 songs in Fake Book format are divided into five sections: 1. Children's Songs, 2. American Folk Songs/Patriotic Songs, 3. Christmas Music, 4. Classical Music, and 5. Gospel/Spiritual/Religious Songs. You will learn how to teach improvisation to piano students and how you can embellish a right hand melody using chords. The entire purpose of weeks 7 and 8 will be to help you as a piano teacher learn how to start teaching your piano students to play the same song 100 different ways and how to play any lead sheet or fake book style song any style you want.

HOW DO WE ATTEND THESE GROUP PIANO LESSONS?

These online group piano lessons are held once a week - live with Music Mentor Jerald Simon. These are not one-on-one piano lessons, as many piano teachers will attend the live streamed weekly piano lessons from all over the world. The live piano lesson is held through ZOOM (piano teachers will receive the link to either when they sign up for piano lessons).

All piano teachers can watch/re-watch the recording if they miss a lesson and cannot attend live. Piano teachers will have access to every previous lesson that has been recorded in the archives. In addition, piano teachers will be able to watch pre-recorded weekly piano lessons where Jerald demonstrates and teaches each individual COOL SONG. This way students can watch each individual piano lesson for each COOL SONG as many times as they'd like during the week until the next weekly live piano lesson. Piano teachers have a personal login account to access the PDF sheet music, video lessons, and accompanying MP3 minus tracks of Jerald's COOL SONGS Series. These are perfect for piano students worldwide!

There are a total of 8 individual 1 hour long piano lessons (one per week - four per month over a two month period). Each of these weekly online group piano lessons will be 60 minutes long. As a reminder, these are not one-on-one individual piano lessons. These are group piano lessons where Jerald is teaching a live piano lesson every week that is streamed to the entire group of piano teachers around the world. Each weekly lesson is recorded and uploaded within the private membership site if you miss one of the live lessons.

Here is something I tell all of my piano students...

A message from Jerald to piano students, parents, and teachers.

If you come to piano lessons each week and walk away only having learned about music notation, rhythm, and dots on a page, then I have failed as a Music Mentor. Life lessons are just as important, if not more important than music lessons. I would rather have you learn more about goal setting and achieving, character, dedication, and personal improvement. To have you learn to love music, appreciate it, and play it, is a wonderful byproduct you will have for the rest of your life - a talent that will enrich your life and the lives of others. To become a better musician is wonderful and important, but to become a better person is more important. As a Music Mentor I want to mentor students to be the very best they can be. If you choose not to practice, you essentially choose not to improve. This is true in any area of life. Everyone has the same amount of time allotted to them. What you choose to do with your time, and where you spend your time, has little to do with the activities being done and more to do with the value attached to each activity. I believe it’s important to be well-rounded and have many diverse interests. I want students to enjoy music, to learn to be creative and understand how to express themselves musically - either by creating music of their own, or interpreting the music of others - by arranging and improvising well known music. In addition, I encourage students to play sports, dance, sing, draw, read, and develop all of their talents. I want them to be more than musicians, I want them to learn to become well-rounded individuals. Above all, I want everyone to continually improve and do their best. I encourage everyone to set goals, dream big, and be the best they can be in whatever they choose to do. Life is full of wonderful choices. Choose the best out of life and learn as much as you can from everyone everywhere. I prefer being called a Music Mentor because I want to mentor others and help them to live their dreams.
Your life is your musical symphony. Make it a masterpiece!

Here is what I feel my (Jerald's) mission in life is...

“My purpose and mission in life is to motivate myself and others through my music and writing, to help othersfind their purpose and mission in life, and to teach values that encourage everyone everywhere to do and be theirbest.” - Jerald Simon

"Jerald Simon is an expert at reaching teen students and connecting to them with the music they love.

With his COOL SONGS Series, Jerald creates amazing orchestral backing tracks which are stunning! I know how much my students enjoy playing along with backing tracks! You'll love using these COOL SONGS with your students (and so will they)!"
Jennifer Foxx
"Jerald Simon is a creative music guru when it comes to anything that can be created from an essential piano exercise.

What is cool about all his essential piano exercises is what you could ultimately turn around and do with them. Compose, improvise, arrange, mash ups, remix, the list can go on and on…

And if the exercises aren’t enough, Jerald is always there and willing to lend plenty of support through online groups, lessons, and challenges."
Allysia Van Betuw
"In the online world, it can sometimes be difficult to find real, genuine instructors who are interested and invested in you.

Fortunately Jerald is not only an inspiring music teacher, but also a wonderful person. He cares about making piano practical and fun."
